Grammy Award nominee Trey Hensley, who has been called “Nashville’s hottest young player” by Acoustic Guitar magazine and is a two-time IBMA Guitar Player of the Year nominee, is known for his white-hot picking. Trey is one half of the duo Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley, who have been referred to as “two musical phenoms” by NPR and “two of the finest musicians playing today” by No Depression. Trey made his debut on the Grand Ole Opry at the age of 11 (thanks to an invite from Marty Stuart with Earl Scruggs). Since that fateful night, he’s played on stage with or opened for the likes of Johnny Cash, Peter Frampton, Steve Wariner, Tommy Emmanuel, Taj Mahal, Jorma Kaukonen and Charlie Daniels, among many others.

In this class, Trey will focus on teaching about learning how to improvise while flat picking in a Bluegrass/Americana/Blues setting. He will be talking about how learning fiddle tunes and bluegrass standards have helped to open up the fretboard for him. Trey will also hit on learning new “tricks” when improvising, as well as “borrowing” licks from other players in other genres (from jazz, blues, and bluegrass to rock and roll) and the importance of players developing their own arsenal of notes to use in different settings. In addition, he will be sharing some insights on right-hand technique when flat picking and building speed. In addition, he’ll be explaining his preferred flat picking gear; i.e. preferred picks, strings, and even live setting gear (pickups, pedals, etc.) Students for this class will enjoy a deep dive into these topics and many more, while gaining valuable knowledge about flat picking and carving out their own sound.

About Trey Hensley

Keeping true to the roots of country music is not only a lovely sentiment of nostalgia, but a necessity for the growth of an artist…and staying true to the roots just comes naturally for Trey Hensley. After picking up a guitar at the age of 10, he quickly took the bluegrass world by storm — even performing on the Grand Ole Opry when he was 11. Through the years, Trey has had the opportunity to perform with the likes of Marty Stuart, Earl Scruggs, Johnny and June Carter Cash, Charlie Daniels, Steve Wariner, The Oak Ridge Boys, Ricky Skaggs, Blue Highway, J.D. Crowe and many others and Trey has opened shows for Marty Stuart, President George W. Bush, Former First Lady Laura Bush, Dick Cheney, Charlie Daniels, Peter Frampton, Alabama front-man Randy Owen, Sara Evans and others.

In the Fall of 2012, Trey had the opportunity to sing a “scratch vocal” on a song in the studio for legendary Bluegrass super group Blue Highway. The group ended up liking the vocal so much that they left Trey’s vocal on the finished product. The album, titled “The Game”, was released in January 2014 with Trey Hensley as a special guest on the song ‘My Last Day in the Mine’.
