Blind Blake and Big Bill Broonzy are two foundational players in American blues guitar history, for good reason. Both had a profound effect on those guitarists who followed. For us fingerstyle guitar pickers, their music is a treasure trove of fingerstyle blues and ragtime guitar moves, adaptable to many styles.
In this class we will look closely at the signature sounds of both players, including songs such as Blake’s West Coast Blues and Early Morning Blues to Broonzy’s Hey Hey, In The Evenin’, Key to the Highway and others.
In addition, we will study up close the styles of these players including signature intros, turnarounds and endings, and especially the right and left-hand tricks and techniques that result in these sparkling guitar sounds. From Blake’s syncopated right-hand rolls to Broonzy’s driving thump bass rhythms, we will learn how to take these seminal blues styles and make them a part of our own guitar playing.
