Guitarist, singer and songwriter Bill Kirchen first gained national recognition as a founding member of Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen, where his trademark guitar lick drove their Hot Rod Lincoln into the Top Ten in 1972. He has released 14 CDs on his own, and recorded and/or played guitar live with a who’s who of Americana and Roots Rock ‘N’ Roll, among them Gene Vincent, Link Wray, Bo Diddley, Linda Ronstadt, Doug Sahm, Hoyt Axton, Emmylou Harris, Maria Muldaur, Dan Hicks, Nick Lowe and Elvis Costello.
Bill’s workshop traces his playing from roots in folk and blues, on through the classic country and r’n’r styles of the 50s and 60s and how they merge as Americana today. We will learn some signature licks, including the Hot Rod Lincoln lead. We’ll examine how to find your sonic place in a song, and how to construct original lead lines while still honoring the melody. There’ll be some gear talk, and what workshop would be complete without a generous sprinkling of licks and tricks. Bill will be glad to oblige.
All this plus a few tales from the road, where Bill has had the good fortune to cross paths and guitars with some very colorful and interesting characters.
