All Levels

Jorma Kaukonen

This will be an extremely hands on session. In the course of the week, participants will find themselves writing a number of songs. We will be demystifying the creative process and hopefully opening the door to where each student will write songs without being intimidated by the process. I have always felt that music is a great way to dialogue. The really good songs are songs that when you hear it…there’s just something about it that touches your heart, and you don’t know why. I will mentor each of my students on how to keep their heart and ears open always listening for the story that needs to be told.

February 6-10, 2017
Jorma Kaukonen with David Wolff

Jorma's Embryonic Journey: The Songbook

Level 3

Spencer BohrenThis class...subtitled “The Songbook”... will feature songs that have been a big part of Jorma's canon of music that have comprised his musical journey. We'll start with some of the fundamental blues that were there at the beginning of Jorma's journey. We'll then travel to the stellar regions with the Jefferson Airplane and some songs that have been a constant in Jorma's musical career. Of course, Hot Tuna has been a big part of the journey and during this workshop several Hot Tuna classics will be analyzed and studied. For good measure we will also take a couple songs from Jorma's distinguished solo career and these will add to the story.

In each of these songs is a story......and also a guitar lesson. So, we will study the material that has been the soundtrack to Jorma's career and enjoy the music while learning techniques that have made these songs so enduring. While the songs are all important... the emphasis and focus will be on the guitar playing style that complemented the music along the way.

For this class Jorma will be joined by David Wolff, his partner in the online music education site, BreakDownWay.com. All students signing up for this workshop will receive 2 FREE months subscription to BreakDownWay.com to help enhance this learning experience (subscription will be for 1 month before the workshop and 1 month following the workshop).

Be forewarned, you're going to have a lot of fun in this class.

Maui Attractions:

Known as the “Valley Isle,” Maui is dotted with quaint towns, artist communities and local favorites that have been around for generations. From shimmering beaches and sacred Iao Valley to migrating humpback whales and sunset on Haleakala, it’s not surprising Maui was voted the “Best Island” by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler for more than twenty years.

What’s the weather like in Hawaii in January?

Hawaii’s weather is warm year round — even in the middle of winter. Hawaii’s weather is warm enough to allow tropical flowers and trees to bloom all through the year. January daytime high temperatures typically average in the low 80s at most Hawaii beach resort areas. Evening temperatures call for a light sweater as they dip into the low to mid 60’s.

Road to Hana

The Road to Hana is a must for Maui visitors. Travel through lush forest, along rugged volcanic coastline, and next to the most picturesque waterfalls in the world.

Whale Watching

Maui Whale Watching is some of the best in the world because every year thousands of Humpback Whales come to Maui in order to breed or give birth. The competitive surface behavior from Humpback males will blow you away!

Haleakalā National Park

Haleakalā National Park is a national park located on the island of Maui. The park features the dormant Haleakalā (East Maui) Volcano, which last erupted sometime between 1480 and 1600 AD. The park is divided into two distinct sections: the summit area and the coastal Kipahulu area. An extremely winding but well maintained road leads up the mountain. The summit area includes Haleakalā Crater, the summit of the volcano, and the area surrounding the summit.

Iao Valley

Towering emerald peaks guard the lush valley floor of Iao Valley State Park. Located in Central Maui just west of Wailuku, this peaceful 4,000-acre, 10-mile long park is home to one of Maui’s most recognizable landmarks, the 1,200-foot Iao Needle. This iconic green-mantled rock outcropping overlooks Iao stream and is an ideal attraction for easy hiking and sightseeing.
